Victoria Cross honour for dead British soldier

Lance Corporal James Ashworth died trying to save comrades in Afghanistan in 2013

Youngest recipient of the honor since Second World War

A British soldier who died trying to save his comrades in Afghanistan has been posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

Lance Corporal James Ashworth, 23, from Corby, Northamptonshire, was serving with the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards when he was killed in a firefight in Helmand Province on June 15, 2013.

According to the citation for his award, L/Cpl Ashworth's "outstanding bravery, self-sacrifice, and determination in the face of the enemy" saved the lives of at least three of his comrades.

L/Cpl Ashworth is the youngest recipient of the Victoria Cross since World War II.
