However, the new study found that bonobos' DNA sequences diverged from chimpanzees' more recently. This suggests that the two species shared a common ancestor after the split from humans.

The researchers compared the bonobo genome directly with those of chimpanzees and humans. They discovered that a significant portion of bonobo DNA—approximately 16%—is shared specifically with humans. This shared genetic material is not found in chimpanzees, indicating a unique evolutionary relationship between bonobos and humans.

This finding has important implications for our understanding of human evolution and the relationships among primate species. It suggests that bonobos may have played a more significant role in our evolutionary history than previously thought.
